The Appeal Board is an independent quasi-judicial tribunal. It has a review and appeal mandate under twelve different statutes. These are:

The majority of the Appeal Board's work involves hearing appeals under the Health Insurance Act, the Health Protection and Promotion Act, the Connecting Care Act, 2019 (formerly the Home Care and Community Services Act), the Fixing Long-Term Care Act, 2021 (formerly the Long-Term Care Homes Act) and the Integrated Community Health Services Act (formerly the Independent Health Facilities Act).
